Edward
Freeney
Edward is primarily a landscape painter and works in the mediums of both watercolour and oil. Water, strong light - especially winter light, long shadows and the conveying of a mood are all things he is drawn to. He has painted many landscapes all over Ireland, especially enjoying painting his native Dublin City and the surrounds of Co. Wicklow. Travels throughout Europe have also inspired him with Venice and Rome being firm favourites.
Born into an artistic family –his father, Tom was a well known signwriter and illustrator who loved watercolour painting. From the age of twelve, Edward and his brother John were brought out to paint watercolours with their Dad and his artist friends. Edward studied art and design both at NCAD and Rathmines College.
Edward first showed at the RHA annual exhibition at the age of 18 and has showed there many times since. He was selected for the Banquet Exhibition at the RHA, by the artist Tom Nisbet. Edward also became a member of the Watercolour Society at 18 and has exhibited in their annual exhibition every year since (64 years to date). Over the years the society has awarded him both the Dart Award and The Presidents Award. Edward is also a member of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, showing in their annual exhibition each year. He has also shown in several Oireachtas exhibitions. For many years he exhibited in both the Mulvany Bros. and Kilcock galleries. His work is in many private collections and also in the Limerick University Collection.
In the world of advertising agencies, Edward was known for years as an artist/ illustrator who painted large bulletin boards. In 1998, he received a contract to paint full colour bus advertising from Dublin Bus. Many buses were completed over the years – all hand painted, using artist quality paints with a mixture of his own varnishes.
